Bedok HDB flats for assisted living to be launched by Dec 23

In December, 250 units of community care apartments in Bedok are being sold to assist Singaporean seniors in aging independently.

This is the third project of its kind. It combines senior-friendly housing, on-site activities, and care services. In 2021, two such projects will be launched in Bukit batok and Queensway.

If the model for care provision is effective and scalable we will increase the supply of apartments and launch 30 of these apartments in various locations throughout Singapore by 2030.

The 250 flats for assisted living are part of 1,234 flats in the Chai Chee Green Build to Order (BTO). The project will include three-room, five-room and four-room flats “to foster intergenerational bonds, as well fostering inclusivity and community interactions”.

The waiting times for flats can range between three years, three months and three years, seven months.

Each assisted-living flat is about 32 square metres, and will be equipped with senior-friendly fittings, such as grab bars, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms with slip-resistant flooring, and wide wheelchair-friendly main doors.

The flats have an open plan that can be customized and divided with sliding partitions. They also include a built-in closet, cabinets and a fully finished kitchen, so seniors can move in with little or no renovation.

Residents of these flats are entitled to a basic package that includes essential services, such as 24-hour monitoring for emergencies and basic health screenings. Daycare, laundry services and meal services are optional services that can be purchased at an additional cost.

Residents will have access to social and wellness activities as well as care services. They can also be admitted to nearby nursing homes if necessary.

The cost of the apartment is made up of two parts: the price of the flat rate and the price of the basic service package. The flat price must be paid upfront. Residents have two options to pay for the basic package. They can either pay S$175 – S$185 per month, with a one-year upfront security deposit, OR pay S$6,300 – S$7,000 every three years.

Seniors will have easy access to nearby social and communal amenities, including a dining house and a Residents’ Network Centre.

Both the applicant and their spouse need to be 65 years of age in order to apply for a Community Care Apartment. The lease can range from 15 to 35 years in increments of five years. This will cover them until the age of 95.

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, except weekends and holidays. It includes 3D models of assisted-living blocks and flat units, as well as mock-ups of communal spaces and showrooms of flats. The exhibition also provides information on the eligibility requirements and service packages.
